Bone Grafting

A dental bone graft is required when there has been bone loss in the jaw. It is usually performed prior to dental implant placement to create a stable base for the implant, to stop the progression of gum disease, or where the bone loss is negatively affecting the neighbouring teeth either aesthetically or functionally. It essentially adds density and volume to the jaw in areas where there has been bone loss. Once the bone graft has been placed, your own bone tissue grows and regenerates around it.

The bone grafting procedure is simple and can be performed under local anesthetic. A small incision is made in the tissue of the gum and then the gum is gently separated from the bone. The bone grafting material is then placed on the affected site. The gum is sutured into place and then we wait for the bone regeneration process to begin. A follow-up appointment is made within 10 days to assess progress. Bone grafting is a highly successful treatment and a very good base for further periodontal restorations.
